Situated in the beautiful northwoods of Minnesota, sits Itasca State Park. If you’ve never been there, I would highly recommend a trip. Our MnSCU Online support center staff would say the same about Itasca Community College, located (literally) over the river and through the woods.
We visited ICC on March 1 and learned that the two destinations have a lot in common:
- First of their kind: Established in 1891, Itasca State Park was Minnesota’s first State Park. Likewise, ICC was the first comprehensive community college when it joined the college’s transfer and pre-professional programs with the area vocational school in 1967.
- Unique programming: ICC features some of the most natural resources programs available: a 16-credit professional Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Certificate that explores geospatial technologies; an AS in Strategic Security Studies focused on trends in and methodologies used to prevent terrorism; and a Wildland Firefighting program recognized as a top fire science program for women. In comparison, our great state’s parks feature a ton of great naturalist programs ranging from bird-watching to minnow racing.
- “Best Place to Start”: The Mississippi River is one of the world’s major river systems and its headwaters are located at none other than Itasca State Park. Itasca Community College specializes in college transfer, so it’s a great place for students who are undecided on a college major or are looking to complete general education credits before transferring to a university.
From a rich history comes your bright future!
